2024 Syrah Grower Series Winemaking Details
by Shay Code
·
Our 2024 Syrah was crafted at our winery in Okanagan Falls, BC from grapes grown in the Rattlesnake Hills AVA in Washington State. This wine is part of our 2024 Grower Series which we made from purchased grapes, given the crop loss we suffered from the extreme cold temperatures in January 2024.
We chose to source our Syrah from a relatively cooler AVA like Rattlesnake Hills, because we wanted growing conditions aligned to our own site in Okanagan Falls. Which in turn would provide a fruit profile to allow us to continue making a Northern Rhone-style Syrah emphasizing the elegant and savoury elements of this versatile grape.
We were happy with the quality of the fruit from the approximately 10 year old vines. We picked the grapes at a relatively modest sugar level (24 brix) on October 1. Both the sugar level and pick date aligned nicely to our estate vineyard in Okanagan Falls, thus providing us an opportunity to make a unique wine, but one aligned to our previous house style.
We destemmed the fruit and let the whole berries cold soak in open top fermenters before inoculating the wine with a classic Mediterranean yeast. After an extended maceration, we pressed off the wine into French Oak barrels (37% new) allowing the wine to complete malolactic fermentation and age for 10 months. It was bottled unfined and unfiltered on August 26, 2025.
